The highlighted videos are the most highest yielding videos. I realize this page is very long and likely overwhelming, so those videos are the most essential on this page.
Feeling bored is one of the biggest barriers to being productive, and in the modern age of constant stimulation, I hear many people struggle with tolerating boredom. With this page, I wanted to write some about it.
To understand boredom, I first used this HealthyGamer video search site to see where Dr. K talks about boredom.
Understanding boredom
- In this video, check out the timestamp: “boredom, the minds cheat code” at 2:03:33. My hyperlink should take you right to that spot.
- Boredom is a signal from the mind that our thought bank is getting low. "Oh my God, we are running out of things to think about. Let's go find something else." It's a panic. The mind wants to move away from awareness and stillness and into autopilot. Thoughts are food for the mind - they feed the mind, so that the mind does not go hungry and be in pain.
- Boredom is a stimulus seeking impulse. A mind that is unoccupied is bored.
- Boredom is the mind's nuclear threat to stop you from doing something it doesn't want to do. One simple technique is to look at what the boredom is trying to move you away from. Boredom is strong but dumb. See where the boredom is pushing you, then look in the opposite direction and you'll discover something about yourself. Boredom is often a shield for fear.
- Listen to this meditation practice that shows how the mind is constantly looking for stimuli. It involves slowing down, slowing down very much. What is the point of this meditation? To show how the mind has conditions in which it is uncomfortable, and one of those conditions is the lack of stimulation. One goal of meditation is to reach the end of thought, which can happen my practicing meditation with time, luck, and over the course of months to years.
- There are a few types of boredom. One is being in an unstimulating environment, like a dry chemistry lecture. People can also feel incredibly bored in some romantic relationships, as Dr. K talks about in one of the videos in the HG Search function.
Moments to pay attention to
- If you normally check your phone during a moment of transition (like you just parked your car), then you’ll notice it’s painful to ride out that impulse to check the phone.
- If you’re in the habit of doing so, it’s deeply uncomfortable to use the toilet and not go on your phone. Interestingly, you may notice a rational part saying “You could check for emails right now, or write down a note you’ve been meaning to.” It sounded reasonable to me at the time, but honestly, do I really need to? Is a few minutes without my phone going to make my day’s productivity greater? It’s absurd to think so. Here the intellect is hijacked by the emotion and addiction in these moments. Your mind gives you reasons to do things all the time that are not coming from a place of healthy place.
- It’s also painful to eat a meal without a video if you’re used to that.
- Although this isn’t related to boredom specifically, here is another way the mind hijacks the intellect: Do I really need 5 chips ahoy cookies instead of 3? No, but my mind literally has the thought “eh, what is two more when you’ve already had 3?”
- If you pay very close attention you’ll notice those kinds of thoughts
